Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who can Locum?

Any medical practitioner with full unconditional registration from RMO1 up.

2. Where can I work?

We have locum work available on casual and longer term basis throughout Australia in Public and Private hospitals. If you wish to work in another state to the one you are registered in then you can apply for mutual recognition in that state.

3. Do I need my own medical indemnity insurance to locum?

This depends where you will be working. If you are intending to work in the Public Hospital system under a PAYE system, then you will be indemnified by the hospital as you are recognized as a hospital employee. If you are required to invoice the hospital through the ABN system, for example through a private hospital, then you require your own professional indemnity insurance.

4. How much will I get paid?

Hourly rates vary between shifts and are quoted at the time they are advertised. Rates can range from approx $75 per hour to $120 per hour depending on level of experience and the urgency with which the hospital needs to fill the shift. Crisis rates up to $180 per hour can occur, and our locums are promptly notified when these are available.

5. How do I get paid?

This depends on the hospital, but most commonly either-:
(a) ABN- the locum is employed as a contractor, so an invoice needs to be submitted once you have completed your shift. At BPML, we do this for you.
(b) PAYE- the locum is an employee of the hospital and is required to fill out Tax file declaration, bank account details etc and submit this through HR department. You must fill out a timesheet and then submit this to HR or medical administration. You will be paid by EFT in the hospitals next fortnightly pay cycle. We will let you know of the appropriate procedures when you shift is confirmed.

6. Is there much paperwork for me to handle?

Once you register with BPML, we handle all your paperwork. This includes issuing shift confirmation to you and the hospital, invoicing, chasing late payments, and submitting your CV and proof of medical registration and indemnity as required.

7. How do I submit my CV?

You can email or Fax your CV to us - see our contact page for the details.

8. Do I need a provider number?

Not usually, unless specifically required by the hospital. If required, we will include this in the requirements when the shift is advertised.
